TIFFIN, OHIO – November 8, 2024 – Downtown Tiffin invites residents and visitors to the 3rd Thursday annual “Holiday Window Reveals” on November 21 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The event will feature the unveiling of 21 uniquely decorated window displays throughout the downtown area.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Seneca County Justice Center Courthouse, where attendees can gather before joining the crowd and experience the festive stroll. Participants are welcome to follow along with the group or explore the displays at their own pace. A map of the window locations will be located on the Downtown Tiffin Holiday Window Reveals Facebook event page.

“The holiday window reveal is a wonderful way to kick off the season and celebrate the creativity and spirit of our community,” said Mayor Wilkinson. “We invite everyone to join us for this festive tradition and experience the magic of the season together. Let’s show our appreciation to all of our merchants who put in the extra effort to bring joy and holiday cheer to us all.”

Attendees are also welcome to visit local shops and restaurants and enjoy DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) beverages. Many local businesses will offer special promotions, discounts, and extended hours to help kick off the holiday shopping season.

The “Holiday Window Reveals” is a community favorite, bringing people together to celebrate the season. Along with the event, the Downtown Tiffin holiday lights will illuminate the streets, adding to the cheerful atmosphere.

Columbus, OH—October 29, 2024  Heritage Ohio announced that the Tiffin Seneca Economic Partnership/Downtown Tiffin will host the next Preservation Assessment Workshop (PAW) beginning November 18. The workshop begins Monday evening with a free lecture at The Empire 138, 138 South Washington Street, beginning at 5:30 pm. No RVSP is required, and the lecture is open to the public, but seating will be limited.

Mr. David Mertz, former director of Belmont College’s renowned Building Preservation/Restoration program, will speak on building pathology and common issues that plague old and historic buildings. From the basics of being a good steward and planning your maintenance routine, to spotting water infiltration and masonry issues, Mertz will instruct building owners on carefully evaluating little problems now before they have the chance to become big problems in the future.

Mertz will spend Tuesday, November 19 in Downtown Tiffin, conducting one-on-one building assessments with building owners pre-selected by the workshop sponsor, Downtown Tiffin. He will evaluate current conditions of the owner’s building and provide advice to address maintenance issues, active deterioration, or future trouble spots. Heritage Ohio staff will follow up on assessment recommendations to ensure building owners have clear next steps to address priority actions.

TIFFIN, OHIO – October 1, 2024 – Get ready for a fun and festive evening as Downtown Tiffin hosts the Fall Flannel Fest & Great Pumpkin Drop, a new addition to the Third Thursday series! This free, family-friendly event will take place on Thursday, October 17, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in City Lot 6, offering a variety of fall-themed activities, food trucks, and entertainment.

The highlight of the night will be the Great Pumpkin Drop at 6:30 p.m., where the Tiffin Fire & Rescue Department will drop pumpkins from the top of a fire truck ladder, creating a thrilling spectacle for all ages. Attendees are invited to vote for their favorite pumpkin before it is smashed by donating, with proceeds benefiting the Sentinel Career and Technology Center. Many of the evening’s activities, including the pumpkins used in the drop, are created by Sentinel students.

Downtown Tiffin will be attending the Heritage Ohio Main Street awards ceremony at the annual Heritage Ohio Preservation and Revitalization Conference, taking place Oct. 15-17 in Newark, Ohio. Downtown Tiffin has been selected as finalists in four categories: Spirit of Main Street Award, Young Preservationist of the Year, Best Residential Rehabilitation, and Best Main Street Committee Project Award.

Tiffin’s Downtown Development Committee (DDC) board is proud to announce that four of the nominations are finalists for this year’s award ceremony in Newark, OH on October 15, 2024.

The following groups/individuals have been selected as finalists: Robb and Shellie Mack (Best Residential Rehabilitation), Destination Seneca County (Best Committee Project – Elope at the Eclipse), Reineke-Reinbolt Family (Spirit of Main Street), and Kit Tiell and Skylar Mettert (Young Preservationist of the Year).

Hosted by the Seneca County Young Professionals (SCYP), this popular event is part of the Third Thursday series and will be held in Downtown Tiffin’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), taking over City Lots 5 & 7 on Washington Street.

This year’s Pizza Party will feature a mouthwatering lineup of pizza-themed dishes from some of Tiffin’s favorite local restaurants. Vendors include Clover Club, Domino’s Pizza, The Empire, Fort Ball Pizza Palace, FroZone Tiffin, Golda’s YUMobile, GW’s Fine Food & Spirits, Heavenly Pizza, Jac & Do’s, Marco’s, Napoli Pizza, Reino’s Pizza & Pasta, Simply Susan’s, The Bagel Buggy, and The VC Tiffin Cameo.

Tickets are just $2 and can be purchased ahead of time at Pan Yan Bookstore, Ralph’s Joy of Living, Simply Susan’s, and The Renaissance of Tiffin. Tickets will also be available the night of the event in City Lots 5 & 7, with cash payments only.

Half of the proceeds from each ticket sold will benefit Seneca Mentoring Youth Links (SMYL), a nonprofit that connects local kids, ages 6 to 17, with mentors who provide guidance, stability, and positive influence in their lives.

Participants are encouraged to pitch ideas for Downtown Design projects, Marketing events, new business ventures, or building developments. Each pitch must be accompanied by a completed work plan and include a proposed budget. In addition to presenting ideas, individuals or groups must be prepared to chair the event or project, join the related committee, and secure approval from the respective committee and the Downtown Development Committee (DDC) board.

The Pitch Parties are designed to encourage community involvement and creativity, ensuring that Downtown Tiffin continues to thrive as a dynamic and inviting destination. This initiative underscores our commitment to inclusive and collaborative planning, encouraging diverse voices to contribute to the ongoing development of our downtown.

A decade ago, downtown Tiffin was a quiet cluster of streets spotted with small shops and empty storefronts. Thanks to local leaders who had the vision to invest their time and effort into pursuing accreditation from Main Street America, Tiffin’s downtown is now thriving upon a foundation of economic development and small business support.

Since March, 2023, the local Main Street America initiative has been led by Downtown Tiffin Main Street Manager, Donna Gross, a local small business owner whose passion for supporting other small business owners made her a perfect fit for the job. Gross owns Relevé Barre Studio in downtown Tiffin and was engaged in the Main Street America project as a volunteer before she was offered the downtown manager position.

“Being an entrepreneur myself, I have a heart for small businesses,” Gross said. “One of my favorite parts of the job is talking to potential small business owners and giving them the tools and encouragement they need.”

According to the Main Street America website, the organization “leads an inclusive, impact-driven movement dedicated to reenergizing and strengthening older and historic downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts nationwide.” Main Street America is a national organization that is hosted statewide by Heritage Ohio.

All Main Street communities function under an umbrella model of the four points of Economic Vitality, Design, Promoting and Organization. Gross has a team of volunteers who sit on committees and do the engagement work to meet the requirements of each of these points.

Locally, Economic Vitality initiatives are addressed by the Business Enhancement Committee. Among other duties, committee members focus on business retention and expansion by contacting downtown businesses twice a year to check their needs and progress.

The Design Committee is staffed by professionals who volunteer their time to enhance the esthetics of downtown through conceptual design projects and everyday improvements like new benches or bike racks. The Marketing Committee focuses on promotion initiatives through social media posts and community events like the Kris Kringle Markt, which drew about 5,000 people to Tiffin in its first year. The Kris Kringle Markt was created by Gross and a friend.

Organization goals are met by the Downtown Development Committee, which works toward continued Main Street America accreditation. Earning accreditation is not an easy task. It requires the submission of work plans and adherence to many Main Street America requirements.

“It’s a lot of reporting,” Gross said.

A stroll through downtown Tiffin, where thriving small businesses are busy with customers, provides a clear view of Gross’ success, but a deeper look into the data behind the efforts tells the real story. In 2023, the success of Downtown Tiffin yielded $250,000 in economic impact and helped draw 13 new businesses and create 86 new jobs. The downtown vacancy rate was at a low 4.1%, and over 12,500 people attended special events, bringing their wallets with them.

Although Main Street communities must abide by uniform rules, Tiffin is unique within the organization. Most Main Street communities are independent nonprofits, but Tiffin falls under the auspices of the Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership (TSEP), a nonprofit organization that drives economic, downtown and community development across Seneca County. As a program of TSEP, Downtown Tiffin can focus on small business support instead of fundraising and is free to partner with the Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce, giving it twice the economic development muscle and ensuring comprehensive support for local businesses.

“We work collaboratively with the chamber. It’s fantastic,” Gross said.

It all begins with Gross’ initial connection with a prospective small business owner.

“I remember what it’s like to start a new business, and it’s a little scary,” Gross said. “But they have this organization to give them the tools and encouragement they need.”
