Tiffin, Ohio – February 19, 2025 – Yesterday, the City of Tiffin’s Architectural Board of Review approved a $10,000 Façade Enhancement Grant for The Tiffin Boutique Hotel Group LLC as part of the City of Tiffin’s Façade Enhancement Program. The funds will contribute to the restoration of the building’s historic windows, advancing the nearly $10 million boutique hotel project in Downtown Tiffin.

This long-awaited redevelopment of the former Gibson Hotel, originally built in 1874, has gained momentum thanks to the dedication of 26 local investors and a robust combination of local, state, and federal funding. Key financial resources include a 12-year, 100-percent Community Reinvestment Area (CRA) tax exemption, over $2 million in state and federal historic tax credits, and a Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) loan from NOPEC. The project is also made possible by Melissa Calvin of Superior Credit Union who is providing financing.  Construction is slated to begin this spring.

The Tiffin Boutique Hotel will preserve the building’s historic charm while introducing modern amenities. Plans include 26 spacious rooms and suites, two ground-floor retail spaces, and a cocktail bar. The original staircase and skylight will be restored, while a rooftop terrace and meeting space will be added. Energy-efficient upgrades, such as improved HVAC systems and lighting, will also be implemented, supported by the PACE loan.

The project received a boost in December 2022 through the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit Program, which awarded a $1,040,000 state tax credit to support the rehabilitation of this iconic building. These funds were instrumental in ensuring the project’s financial viability.

TIFFIN, OHIO – January 28, 2025 – Downtown Tiffin’s 3rd Thursday event series will continue on Thursday, February 20, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the “Taste in Downtown Tiffin 2.” Due to the popularity of the summer event, a winter edition has been added. Local restaurants will offer a selection of menu samples at The Chandelier Community Event Center, located at 151 S. Washington Street.

Participating eateries will include Baked by Bells, The Bagel Buggy, Carmie’s BBQ & Grill, Clover Club, The Chandelier, Double D’s, The Empire 138, Golda’s YUMobile, Heavenly Pizza, Jolly’s, Parkhurst Dining, Reino’s, and Simply Susan’s.

TIFFIN, OHIO – January 21, 2025 – The 10th annual Downtown Tiffin St. Paddy’s Day 5K Run/Walk is set to take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025. Known as “the luckiest 5K there is,” the event celebrates a decade of festive fun and fitness while supporting downtown revitalization programs.

The race will begin at Calvert Catholic Schools, located at 152 Madison Street, with check-in starting at 8:30 a.m. and the race starting promptly at 10:00 a.m. Registration is $30 and includes a commemorative race T-shirt for participants who register by March 1. Children aged 10 and under can participate for free, with an option to purchase a youth T-shirt.

Awards will be presented to the top male and female runners in youth, adult, and senior categories. A prize for the best-dressed participant will encourage runners and walkers to showcase their St. Patrick’s Day spirit with creative costumes and festive green attire. TIFFIN, Ohio – Jan. 6, 2025 – The Façade Enhancement Program is a City of Tiffin reimbursement grant that was started in 2014 and provides a 50 percent match of funds for eligible exterior improvements on residential and commercial structures within the downtown historic district. Each building is eligible to receive up to $10,000 per calendar year.

Since the Façade Enhancement Program’s inception in 2014, 122 projects have been approved for a total downtown investment of more than $2.9 million. The program continues to be successful with 6 building project approvals in 2024, for an investment of more than $201,050.

The City of Tiffin has approved $100,000 for the program to continue into 2025 and registration is now open. Eligible improvements include all exterior improvements to the appearance of an eligible downtown building front façade. These improvements include: awnings, masonry work, painting, restoration or replacement of exterior windows and doors, repair or replacement of roofing systems, fire escapes or exterior upper floor access, and any other visible exterior improvements, subject to approval by the Architectural Board of Review.

TIFFIN, OHIO – December 9, 2024 – Downtown Tiffin will host several events this December, providing opportunities for community engagement and holiday activities.

The Holiday Window Contest is underway and runs through December 14. Local businesses have created window displays for the contest, with the winner announced on December 15 at The Ritz Theatre before the screening of The Polar Express.

A FREE Holiday Movie showing of The Polar Express will take place on December 15 at 2:00 p.m. at The Ritz Theatre. Santa Claus will be available for visits from noon to 2:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by Downtown Tiffin, Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership, Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Destination Seneca County.

On December 12, Downtown Trivia: Christmas Edition will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus. Teams of up to six people may register to compete. Buddy the Elf, Santa, and the Grinch will serve as judges. Registration is available on Eventbrite.

On December 19, the Downtown Tiffin Third Thursday “Sip & Shop” event will provide a chance for last-minute holiday shopping at over 20 local businesses in the downtown area. Shoppers can enjoy the DORA program while shopping locally.

TIFFIN, OHIO – November 21, 2024   Downtown Tiffin, under the Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership, hosted a two-day Heritage Ohio “Preservation Assessment Workshop” on November 18 and 19. This event brought together community members and experts to focus on maintaining and preserving Tiffin’s historic buildings.

The first day featured an evening lecture at The Empire 138, delivered by David Mertz, a preservation specialist and former director of Belmont College’s renowned Building Preservation/Restoration Program. Mertz provided valuable insights into maintaining historic structures, followed by a Q&A session. The lecture was attended by more than 20 community members, including representatives from the Tiffin Historic Trust, Tiffin City Council, Mayor Wilkinson, local contractors, architects, and property owners. The Reineke/Reinbolt Family and the Tiffin Historic Trust generously sponsored the workshop.

On the second day, a team toured five historic properties in Tiffin to provide detailed preservation assessments. The group included David Mertz, Frank Quinn (Heritage Ohio Director of Preservation), Devin Miles (Heritage Ohio), Donna Gross (Downtown Tiffin Main Street Manager), Noah Paris (Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership), and building owners. The properties included:

• 297 E. Perry Street (Heidelberg University Octagon House)
• 52 E. Perry Street (Kildow Building)
• 95 S. Monroe Street
• 33 S. Washington Street
• 131 S. Washington Street

The building owners will receive comprehensive assessment reports from Heritage Ohio with recommendations for addressing maintenance needs.

TIFFIN, OHIO – November 15, 2024 – Downtown Tiffin under the Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership will host its annual Kris Kringle Markt December 6th and 7th this year. The festival will highlight an open-air holiday market with German/Bavarian-inspired Christmas offerings, late-night retail shopping, and a variety of fun family activities.

Court Street will feature local vendors in white tents adorned with holiday lights offering fresh greens, garland and wreaths, handcrafted gifts, Christmas ornaments, and more. Local downtown retailers will stay open later to offer holiday shopping specials and complimentary treats.

Downtown Tiffin restaurants and bars will feature German-style food, beer selections, mulled wine (Glühwein), and specialty hot chocolate beverages. City Lots 5 & 7 and the County RTA Lot will host a variety of food trucks offering unique Bavarian dishes and beverages.

Santa will be available for pictures at Pan Yan Bookstore, and several other activities will be spread throughout downtown including strolling Christmas carolers, ice sculpture carvings, live reindeer, and complimentary holiday wagon rides. Cherry Alley will feature live Christmas trees for sale that are being sponsored by local businesses along with “S’mores Land” featuring Frozen characters: Olaf, Sven, Anna, Elsa.
