TSEP Launches New Downtown Business Enhancement Survey

Tiffin Seneca Economic Partnership (TSEP) announced today the first new public survey about shopping and dining preferences in downtown Tiffin and the surrounding area since the study contained in the Housing Opportunities Analysis in 2019. Any resident, visitor, employee and student can fill out the survey, which is available at www.tiffinsurvey.com and will be open until July 15, 2021. Participants will be entered into a gift card drawing.

Information from the confidential, short survey will be used to help the Downtown Business Enhancement Committee (DBEC) and TSEP Staff strategically target new businesses to attract to the downtown. The goal will be to do the survey annually or biannually to continually have current, accurate information on the public’s shopping habits and preferences for Downtown Tiffin.

In 2019, the Housing Opportunity Analysis listed a bakery, an indoor farmer’s market, family recreation, a clothing store, and a grocery as the top five businesses. It also listed steakhouse, American traditional, steak & seafood, BBQ, and Breakfast/Brunch as the top five menu types sought for downtown. The new data will provide a way to compare trends over time.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz praised the effort, saying, “Efforts like this are one of the hundreds of things we do to continue our downtown momentum and the number of new businesses starting up and thriving in our center city. I encourage everyone to fill it out.”

Bill Jones, Downtown Business Enhancement Committee Chair, commented “Our intention is to encourage local entrepreneurs and to target the most highly sought business types within a 60-mile radius and ask if they would like to open a new branch.”

Questions should be directed to Amy Reinhart, the Director of Downtown Revitalization, at 419.767.0328 or by email at reinhart@tiffinseneca.org.

TSEP, Chamber Moving to the Heart of Downtown Tiffin

New offices across from Seneca County Justice Center

Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership and Seneca Regional Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Services are announcing that the two organizations are moving their offices to 94 S. Washington St., across from the Seneca County Justice Center. The last day of operations at the Bradley Building, 19 W. Market St., is April 2.

By year’s end, TSEP and the Chamber intend to renovate the first floor of the new building to include a new Welcome Center for Destination Seneca County. While renovations are being completed, TSEP and the Chamber will be operating out of the second floor of the building, which will be accessible to the public during business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Built in 1881, 94-96 S. Washington Street is marked as the Grummel-Remmele Block. The building has had many tenants in its history, including American Discount and most recently as the American Institute of Massage Therapy.

TSEP, then Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corp., purchased the Bradley Building in 2010 and made that theirs and the Chamber’s offices for more than 10 years. This move brings the offices back into the heart of Downtown Tiffin, after having previously operated out of 62 S. Washington St.

TSEP President & CEO David Zak said with the announcement, “We are excited about the move and view it as a commitment to historic preservation, downtown Tiffin, and our partnership with the Chamber and Destination Seneca County.” Chamber Executive Director Bryce Riggs agreed, saying, “We are excited about this next evolution for the Chamber and tourism in Seneca County. We believe a new, upscale welcome center will be inviting and informative for visitors and residents alike.”

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz was pleased with the news, “TSEP and the Chamber are helping to drive business and visitor growth in our community. We congratulate them on the move.” Seneca County Commissioner Mike Kerschner added, “It is fitting that TSEP, the Chamber, and Destination Seneca County move into the civic core of our county seat, across the street from Seneca County Justice Center, a testament to the collaboration that is helping drive us forward.”

During the move, the best way to contact TSEP or Chamber staff is by email, which can be found at their respective websites.

SOUL Boutique Opening in Downtown Tiffin

SOUL Boutique is planning to open its doors in Downtown Tiffin this spring. Tiffin-native Amanda Byrd is excited to open her boutique and offer hemp-based health and beauty products.

SOUL Boutique will offer tinctures, topicals, CBD-infused pet treats, gummies, flavored water, in addition to facial and hair care products. Carrying a variety of Ohio based products and working with Ohio based vendors is important to Byrd. All the products sold are legal and many contain no traces of THC.

“We will work to provide safe, quality CBD products with transparency and offer community education,” Byrd said.

The newly renovated showroom has live wood edge counter tops, and cloud-like epoxied floors. SOUL features a bar area for people to sit and have a conversation with Byrd.

“The space sets the vibe. My goal is that everyone who enters feels the love that has been put into creating this space and the products we carry,” Byrd said. “I’ve always wanted to help people – this shop has given me the opportunity to make a difference in my hometown. Our ideal is to have anyone who steps into the boutique leave feeling uplifted. My vision is to provide unique, natural solutions to help people and their animals find homeostasis in the world today.”

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz said, “Congratulations to Amanda Byrd on the opening of SOUL Boutique and investing in Downtown Tiffin.”

Bailiwicks Owner Purchases Building in Downtown Tiffin

Established in 2011 and opened in 2012, Bailiwicks Coffee Co. has been an integral part of the revitalization of Downtown Tiffin. In January, owner Jess Wirth decided to take her business to the next level, by purchasing her building, 62 S. Washington St., and plans to invest more into the building and equipment over the next five years.

Wirth said she will be investing $70,000 in a total building renovation over the next three years.  March 2, the City of Tiffin Architectural Board of Review approved a matching Downtown Façade Enhancement Grant of $8,215 for masonry and wall repair. Additionally, Wirth expects to invest about $35,000 in new equipment upgrades over the next five years.

In 2016, Wirth invested in a coffee roaster, which is located at the front of the coffee shop, near the counter and in front of the windows on S. Washington St. The roaster has allowed her to introduce a locally-roasted coffee line that is bagged and sold at the coffee shop and at specialty shops throughout Seneca County.

“I’m excited that Bailiwicks is celebrating 9 years in business this year, and that I’ve been able to continue to invest and grow this business in that time,” Wirth said. “Thank you to the Tiffin community for all of your support throughout the years.”

Bailiwicks owner owner Jess Wirth.
Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz commented, “Congratulations to Jess on purchasing her building and continuing to make Downtown Tiffin a destination.”

In 2013, Bailiwicks received the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award from Seneca Industrial and Economic Development Corporation (SIEDC, now Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership). Previous to becoming the coffee house, the building had been the offices of the then-Tiffin Area Chamber of Commerce and SIEDC.

Downtown Tiffin Earns National Accreditation With Heritage Ohio for Fifth Year

For the fifth year, Downtown Tiffin has been re -recognized by Heritage Ohio as a National Main Street Community. The Ohio Main Street Program, administered by Heritage Ohio, works with communities across the state to revitalize historic commercial areas. Based in historic preservation, it focuses on four points: organization, design, promotions and economic vitality. Each point is an integral part in the successful revitalization of a downtown area.

The Ohio Main Street program is a partner of Main Street America. Accreditation is an honor that must be earned every year by meeting the program’s high standards as determined by an annual quality audit by state officials. With this distinction, Downtown Tiffin has received accreditation for its Main Street program at both the state and national level for 2016-2020.

Downtown Tiffin’s revitalization efforts continue to be validated and recognized throughout the state. Since becoming a Main Street Community in 2015, 55 new businesses have located in Downtown Tiffin and nearly $33 million in investment has occurred in the downtown.

In October, Downtown Tiffin was presented with two statewide awards by Heritage Ohio, Best Downtown Placemaking for the Frost-Kalnow Amphitheater at the East Green and National Corner and Historic Farmstead of the Year for Winterberry Farm. Since 2017, Downtown Tiffin has received six additional awards and one honorable mention from Heritage Ohio.

Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz was glad to see Downtown Tiffin recognized. “I’m honored that Downtown Tiffin has received its accreditation for the fifth year. Especially during this difficult year, I’m proud of our business and building owners and the hard work of Amy Reinhart, Director of Downtown Revitalization for Tiffin-Seneca Economic Partnership,  and members of the downtown development committees.”

Bascom Communications Announces Free Wifi in Downtown Tiffin

Bascom Communications has announced today that it has gone live with its downtown wifi service, Community Connect, which offers anyone in the downtown wireless access to the internet free of charge. With the cooperation of the City of Tiffin, Seneca County Board of Commissioners, and the East Green Foundation, Bascom Communications has been working for more than a year to bring the service online.

Users will find the service by bringing up the wifi settings on their phone and connecting to the “Community Connect” network. Users will see an ad or watch a short video for up to an hour of free internet connectivity with no limits on renewal. Additionally, there are paid options for faster speeds and up to a month’s worth of service, with details to be found when connecting. The service has security measures in place to help ensure secure browsing.

Access points are set up in Downtown Tiffin along South Washington Street from the bridge south to Madison Street and along Madison to Jefferson Street up to the East Green. As the service gains users, more access points are to be installed to grow the footprint.

“We’re very proud to be able to offer this service to Downtown Tiffin. As Bascom Communications continues to connect Seneca County, and we’re excited to be able to make this available to those visiting, living or working in Downtown Tiffin,” said Nate Brickner, General Manager/CEO of Bascom Communications.

Bascom Communications was formed in 1906 by a group of farmers wanting to bring voice services to rural Tiffin and Fostoria. In 1953, it became a co-operative company, and since 2000, the company has returned more than $5.2 million in capital credit refunds to its membership. In 2003, they began offering a fiber optic connection directly into members’ homes and businesses and in 2018, they became a certified gig-capable provider by NTCA. Bascom Communications was the recipient of the Outstanding Business Award at the TSEP 2019 Annual Meeting March 7, 2019.

“Bascom Communications was a great partner for the project, and we’re excited for this unique service they are offering for the residents of Tiffin and visitors to Seneca County,” said Seneca County Board of Commissioners President Mike Kerschner.

“With so much going on in the downtown, this is just another service that makes Tiffin and Seneca County a destination,” said Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz. “Thank you to Bascom Communications for this investment.”
